What is the country of origin?
When you set up an item group in Shipvine Logistics, you need to declare the country of origin. It's the country where your product was manufactured or produced. It is not necessarily the country you are exporting the item from. If the product is assembled from components made in different countries, then it's the country where most of it (i.e., 50% or more) came from.
I'm shipping my product from the United States to someone in Canada. Can't I just put the country of origin as US?
That depends on whether or not the product was physically manufactured in the United States. For example, if you're selling a t-shirt that you had made in a factory in South Carolina, then the country of origin is the US. If you're selling a t-shirt that you had made at a factory in Thailand, then the country of origin is Thailand, even though you've imported it into the United States and are exporting it from the United States.
In other words, the country of origin "stays" with the product, no matter how many countries it's passed through along the way. For example, if you were born in Virginia, and then moved to California, you can't tell people you were born in California.
Why is the country of origin important?
Different destination countries may impose different restrictions or taxes on the same kind of product depending on where it was made.
